How do you measure Agile? The frequent measurement tool is whether team is able to finish everything they planned in a single iteration or not. It is good to assess things. This allows people to challenge their abilities and be committed to what they say. Agile Velocity is useful here.
Non examination will make teams believe that they can deliver everything quickly. The product owner must have limited expectations from the team. Too much can reduce the functioning capacity. Some owners even fire their team members for not fulfilling everything in single iteration. It Is Not Necessary in Agile Velocity That Every Team Will Accomplish Almost All Tasks In Their First Iteration. Target: Achievable target for an Agile team is good. You must have a good goal for the team which they can easily complete within the given time frame without being worried or undervalued. Knowing the team ability and providing the targets which they can achieve is a commendable task. A remarkable agile team is the one who can finish its 100% of the plans made to achieve in 8 out of 10 iterations. This is completely different from saying that 80% of work planned in a specific iteration is to be completed. Walk the Talk: This is for those who love to make big plans but achieve nothing. Always think how much you and your team members will be able to complete. Make plans accordingly. Every time, it’s not possible to become successful. Let’s here take an example of the basket ball player. Unless the player feels he’ll make a score, he/she should not shoot the ball. Still, even after being 100% sure, it’s not necessary that every ball will hit the basket. Great basket ball player can make 50% of the shots but for most of the teams, this is not the ideal target. Hence, 80% as it seems to be ideal. How your team works? Is your team successful enough to do what they say? Think again. If not, never put a burden on them. Make them practice the habit of making plans only for what they can achieve. This will not disappoint them instead will boost their confidence and self esteem. Agile velocity measures the team performance. How much a team is able to accomplish within given time frame. It is measured by functions as well as by capacity. In a nutshell: In a single iteration, the team is able to measure how much it has completed. This can be done with Agile Velocity. However, if it fails to complete whatever is decided, it’s time to re-evaluate the performance. Set the target only for what one is able to complete in a particular iteration even if it’s 20% of the work or sometimes only 5%, it doesn’t matter. The thing is to decide that certain amount of work will be completed and based on that iteration target is to be set. What is your team’s iteration score? Is it able to complete everything as per the target or faces any issues?
